ROBERTO CIPRESSO

Roberto Cipresso

Originally from Bassano del Grappa, he began his career as a winemaker in 1987 in Montalcino.

The first collaboration with Gianfranco Soldera opened the doors to other experiences with “Poggio Antico” and “Val di Suga”. From 1988 to 1996 he successfully managed the “Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona” estate. In 1995 he founded his own Brunello company in Montalcino: “La Fiorita”.

In 1999 he began his adventure in Argentina with the “Achaval Ferrer” company. In the same year Roberto formed a formidable team of oenologists and agronomists with whom he worked in all the Italian regions, in Europe, Argentina and Brazil. In 2014 “Matervini” was founded in Argentina, a company dedicated to the search for new terroirs in the Andean mountain range. In 2016, “La Fiorita” split: one part was sold to Louis Camilleri, then president of “Ferrari” and “Philip Morris”, the other part remained with Roberto, integrated into his farmhouse “Poggio al Sole”.

Roberto’s most representative wine, in the field of research, was born in 1995 and bears the name “La Quadratura del Cerchio”.

From a garage to an old warehouse, Roberto Cipresso’s winery took its final step in 2016, an old factory on the outskirts of Montalcino that came back to life. It became his headquarters in which to organize his collection of wines, books and lands. Since 2016, the laboratory and research activity of his company have had several agreements with the most important Italian universities.

Over the years, Roberto has been the creator of award-winning wines. He has collaborated with important Italian and foreign companies and has been the author of some important celebratory wines, such as the “Cuvée Speciale” for Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis, “Il Taglio per l’Unità” for the first one hundred and fifty years of the unification of Italy and the “Mosaico per Procida” Italian capital of culture 2022.

In 2006 he was named best Italian winemaker, received the Oscar del Vino and a few months later became an academic of the prestigious National Agriculture of Bologna.

He is the only foreign corresponding member of the “Academia Argentina della Vid y del Vino” and is an ambassador of Cervim (research and study center on extreme viticulture). In 2010, he received the special Award of Merano Wine Festival as best Italian winemaker abroad.

Along with his wine awards, he has dabbled as a writer, publishing four books since 2006: “Il Romanzo del Vino”, “Vinosofia”, “Vineide” with the help of Giovanni Negri and “Vino. Il Romanzo Segreto” in collaboration with Alessandro Zaltron.

Roberto has always based his choices on sustainability, not only environmental and economic, but also social.

Since 2020 he has been the godfather of the boys of the third sector inn “Centimetro Zero”, in Spinetoli, not far from San Benedetto del Tronto. Finally, he has collaborated with Rai Radio Due, Radio 105 and with his friend Federico Buffa he publishes in Audibile a podcast of 20 episodes entitled: “DIVINO: stories of the history of wine”.
